Born of November 3, 1987, Colin Kaepernick was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to a single mother. He was soon adopted by his parents, and moved to Turlock, California when he was four years old.
He started played football when he was eight years old and when he was nine became the starting quarterback for his team. Although he played football, he also played baseball and was drafted by the Chicago Cubs. He chose not to sign with the Cubs because he wanted to continue his career in football.
He has been playing with the San Francisco 49ers since 2011 and has been their starting Quarterback for awhile now. He has gone through every ups and downs that players go through in their career, but at a much faster pace. There hasn’t always been good blood between him and the team and at one point last season, he was trying to find a way out of the organization, but has since then decided to stay with the team.
Most recently, he has been in the news for not standing during the National Anthem. He said “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color. To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder”. This has caused a national stir, some people agreeing and some not. Either way, Kaepernick is “standing up” for what he believes in.
